Another band, new possibilities. I was fortunate to be invited to join Sexteto Tropical for one gig at the Swing and Sweet jazz club. The band has existed for 10 years, but due to other members’ commitments, they needed substitutes for their piano, bass and trombone players. Happy to join, I learnt that their repertoire was a blend of latin jazz, traditional tunes, and contemporary latinpop oriented stuff. The jazz material included a selection from the Caribbean Jazz Project, such as Latin Quartet, Paco & Dave, and Jamboree. The tune Chucho also belongs to the section by Dave Samuels and Paquito D’riviera. Among the vocal material, the tunes Havana City, as recorded by Los Van Van and by Havana NRG, stood out. So did Girasoles and Chica Cubana, as performed by Interactivo.
